Tips for Packing, Moving, and Self Storage

Self storage is a great option for those about to move, or who simply have an excess amount of belongings they no longer have space for. Below are a few things to consider before renting a storage unit for your items.

Plan ahead: Take an inventory of the things you want to put in storage. Gather up the necessary packing supplies, including sturdy, corrugated cartons, packing paper, bubble wrap, sealing tape and marker pens, along with any furniture covers. You should also invest in a quality storage unit lock for your unit.

Packing tips

Choose a unit: Consider the quantity of things you are going to store, as well as the dimensions of the items. Try to ignore the "I might need it someday" thoughts when it comes to items you rarely ever use. These items can take up valuable space in a unit. Speak with one of the staff at American Self Storage Ocala, who can help estimate the amount of space you will need to store your items.

Clean items: Make sure appliances, like refrigerators and ovens, are clean before placing them in a storage unit. Again, it is important to leave the doors open slightly to allow air to circulate. Other furniture, like wood dressers or tables, should be treated and covered with a protective cloth to maintain their structure while in storage.

Pack boxes: When packing boxes, make sure to fill in as much space as possible. Pack extra space with paper or rags to prevent the box from collapsing when stacking. Make sure your boxes are tightly sealed with packing tape to prevent dust from entering.

Label boxes: Create a label or list to tape to the outside of any storage boxes. Be sure to mark all sides of the box for easy identification. Keep a list (as well as pictures and descriptions) at your home or office for future reference. Be sure to clearly label all boxes containing fragile items, and make sure these are placed on top of sturdier boxes.

Multi-purpose space: Use your refrigerator, stove or other appliances to store linens, books, CDs, and other small items. Ensure the doors of these appliances stay propped open so that air can circulate through. Store shovels, hoes, rakes and hoses together in empty trash cans to help keep your unit organized.

Organize space: Frequently used items should be stored in front for easy access. Utilize any shelving that is available in the unit to help save on floor space. If you can, leave a pathway between boxes to make those stored in the back easier to access.
